Whether you are applying for a job, having a conversation or even telling a joke, you are trying to sell something. Sales is more than just cold calls and prospecting. There is no question about it, you are selling something, but are you successful in doing so?

What is Sales?

Sales is just two parties exchanging value for mutual benefit. This just means that sales is about helping other people get closer to what they want, while they, in turn, help you get what you want. If you understand what sales is you can then define what a salesman is. A salesman isn’t just someone who “does sales,” a salesman leads people towards achieving a better life and gets them what they want.

Everything is Everywhere

Sales is one of the most important parts of a company. A company needs to sell its product or service to drive revenue and to grow. Without sales, a company is not profitable. A company that does not sell, makes no money. To make money, you have to have to be good at sales.

When looking at sales, it is easy to look at it only through the lens of the products and services of a business, but sales is everywhere. Everyday people sell ideas, jokes, and even themselves. Selling requires you to convince someone that you are good, that an idea is correct, or a joke is funny.

How to be Successful

In sales roles, there are several skills that you need to be successful. You need to be able to do cold calls and emails, you need to build lead-lists on potential prospects and maintain records, but some things carry over when selling anything in life.

Sales requires good communication skills both verbally and written. If you can communicate something to someone clearly, concisely and in a way that they understand, then half the battle is won. You don’t have to argue about definitions or what you are asking them to get into because they understand. You also have to be able to handle rejection well. If someone tells you no, then get right back up and move on, don’t give up, keep moving forward. Stopping only guarantees future failure.

Now go apply for that job or tell that joke, but do it the smart way. Be a good salesman. You are selling something, but are you going to be a good salesman?
